Over the past two years I have coached more than 200 faculty members through AI literacy workshops. In that time I have noticed something that has nothing to do with tools, prompts, or policies. The single biggest variable determining whether an individual or institution moves forward with AI is not technical skill. It is courage.
The Problem Isn't AI. It's Fear.
Fear shows up in predictable ways inside organizations. It sounds like, "We should wait until the technology matures." It sounds like, "We need a policy before anyone does anything." It sounds like, "What if our students use it to cheat?" These are real concerns, and they deserve real answers. But when concern curdles into paralysis, organizations do not stay safely still. They fall behind.
The institutions I work with that have made the most meaningful progress with AI share a common disposition. They are not reckless. They are not naive. They have simply decided that thoughtful experimentation is safer than frozen inaction. They have chosen, deliberately, to be brave.
Fear-based avoidance carries its own risks that rarely make it onto the risk-assessment spreadsheet. Faculty who are never introduced to AI tools are unprepared to recognize when students misuse them. Administrators who refuse to engage with AI cannot write policies that are actually workable. Organizations that wait for someone else to figure it out first arrive late to a conversation that is already shaping their industry without them.
What AI Bravery Actually Looks Like
AI bravery is not a personality trait. It is a practice. And like any practice, it can be taught, structured, and supported. Here is what it looks like in real educational institutions.
It looks like a department chair who builds a thirty-minute "AI office hour" into the monthly faculty meeting — not to give answers, but to share questions. What did you try? What surprised you? What would you do differently? That culture of shared experimentation normalizes engagement and reduces the isolation that makes fear worse.
It looks like a professor of social work who spent one afternoon redesigning a single case-study assignment to incorporate AI-generated scenarios as discussion fodder — not replacing her judgment, but extending the range of situations her students could think through. She did not redesign her entire curriculum. She took one step across the bridge.
It looks like a nonprofit communications director who ran two versions of the same donor email — one written entirely by hand, one drafted with AI assistance and then edited — and then compared the open and click-through rates. She did not publish either version without human review. But she gathered real data instead of operating on assumption.
What all of these people have in common is that they moved. They chose a small, bounded experiment and they learned something from it. That is AI bravery.
Bravery Is Not Recklessness
I want to be precise here because the word "brave" can be misread. AI bravery is not the same as AI recklessness. Bravery means acting in the presence of legitimate uncertainty and doing so with intention and care. Recklessness means ignoring legitimate risks because thinking about them is inconvenient.
There are real risks in AI adoption that thoughtful organizations must take seriously: data privacy, algorithmic bias, the erosion of certain cognitive skills if tools are used as a replacement for thinking rather than a scaffold for it, and the uneven access that can widen equity gaps rather than close them. These concerns should inform how you adopt AI. They should not be used as reasons to avoid engaging with it at all.
The "walk across first" philosophy I share with my workshop participants asks one simple question: who in this room is willing to try something small and then come back and tell us what they learned? Not who is willing to stake their entire pedagogy on AI. Not who is ready to overhaul the curriculum. Just who will take one step across the bridge and report back. That is the threshold. It is lower than most people expect.
A Simple Framework for Moving Forward
When I work with an institution to build an AI bravery culture, I use a three-tier framework that keeps experimentation structured and safe.
Tier One: Observe. Before anyone does anything, spend thirty days in observation mode. Use AI tools yourself — in your own professional tasks, not in student-facing work yet. Write a memo with AI assistance. Use a chatbot to summarize a long document you already understand. Build familiarity before you build curriculum.
Tier Two: Experiment in a contained way. Choose one assignment, one workshop module, or one communications piece and redesign it with intentional AI integration. Document what you changed, why you changed it, and what you hoped to learn. After the experiment, debrief — with yourself, with colleagues, with your team.
Tier Three: Share and build policy from practice. The biggest mistake institutions make is writing AI policy before anyone has meaningfully experimented. Effective policy is written from experience. After a cohort of faculty or staff has completed Tiers One and Two, bring them together to articulate what they learned. That conversation becomes the foundation of workable, honest policy.
Where to Start This Week

Pick one task from your own professional workload — not a student assignment, not a donor communication, not anything high-stakes. Pick something routine: a meeting agenda, a first draft of a report, a list of brainstormed questions for an upcoming review. Use an AI tool to assist with it. Spend twenty minutes. Then ask yourself: what surprised me? What felt wrong? What would I do differently next time?
You do not need a policy to do this. You do not need permission. You need twenty minutes and the willingness to learn something.
